William of Sherwood, Singular Propositions and the Hexagon of Opposition

چکیده

In Aristotelian logic, the predominant view has always been that there are only two kinds of quantities: universal and particular. For this reason, philosophers have struggled with singular propositions (e.g., “Socrates is running”). One modern approach to this problem, as first proposed in 1955 by Tadeusz Czeżowski, is to extend the traditional Square of Opposition to a Hexagon of Opposition. We note that the medieval author William of Sherwood developed a similar theory of singular propositions, much earlier than Czeżowski, and that it is not impossible that the Hexagon itself could have been present in Sherwood’s writings.

On the Six Node Hexagon Elements for Continuum Topology Optimization of Plates Carrying in Plane Loading and Shell Structures Carrying out of Plane Loading

The need of polygonal elements to represent the domain is gaining interest among structural engineers. The objective is to perform static analysis and topology optimization of a given continuum domain using the rational fraction type shape functions of six node hexagonal elements. In this paper, the main focus is to perform the topology optimization of two-dimensional plate structures using Evo...

Paraconsistent logic and contradictory viewpoints

We start by recalling the definition of contradiction from the perspective of the square of opposition, emphasizing that it comes together with two other notions of oppositions, contrariety and subcontrariety. We then introduce the notion of paraconsistent negation as a non-explosive negation; we explain the connection with subcontrariety and why it is better not to talk of contradiction in cas...

The Role of the Scholars` Tradition in Formulating Moral Propositions, with an Emphasis on Muhaqqiq Isfahani`s View

The issue of the source of ethical value is one of the most important issues in the field of metaethics. Moral philosophers have come up with different perspectives on this issue. Some Islamic thinkers, including Muhaqqiqi Isfahani, have considered the rationals` tradition as the formulating cause for moral propositions. This research is intended to emphasize on the viewpoint of Muhaqqiqi Isfah...

Oppositions in Rough Set Theory

The role of opposition in rough set theory is laid bare. There are two sources which generate oppositions in rough sets: approximations and relations. In the former case, we outline a hexagon and a cube of oppositions. In the second case, we define a classical square of oppositions and also a tetrahedron when considering the standpoint of two agents.

Two Squares of Opposition: for Analytic and Synthetic Propositions

In the paper I prove that there are two squares of opposition. The unconventional one is built up for synthetic propositions. There a, i are contrary, a, o (resp. e, i) are contradictory, e, o are subcontrary, a, e (resp. i, o) are said to stand in the subalternation.
